Phytoplankton are photosynthesizing microscopic organisms that inhabit the upper sunlit areas of almost all oceans and bodies of fresh water.  They are primary producers, using photosynthesis to create organic compounds from carbon dioxide, a process that sustains the aquatic food web.

Phytoplankton come in many different shapes and sizes.
